Spaniard Fernando Alonso suffered a heavy accident on Wednesday during free practice for the Indianapolis 500. Despite the violence of the impact on Turn 3, the McLaren team rider got out of the car a few seconds later and walked smoothly.
Alonso was behind Graham Rahal at the exit of Turn 3, missed the car, slammed sideways into the outer wall and faced the inner wall, rolled, passed the grass, returned to the track and hit the outer wall again. Now, Alonso lives the expectation of returning to the trainings, but does not know if he will have to use the reserve car. The Dallara chassis destroyed in the crash had been ridden by McLaren at its headquarters in England. Already the reserve was set up by Carlin, which has a base in the United States for having a team in Formula Indy, and McLaren had no control in the assembly.
Now the team is running out of time to hit the two cars, both the holder and the reserve, because the grid definition of the 500 Miles start will be this weekend, Saturday and Sunday.
