FÓRMULA-1
We are now in the year 2021
One of the major focuses of the new regulations that will be introduced in 2021 is the ability of the cars to be able to fight closer together. The new concept studied by F1 leaders presents exciting numbers
Ross Brawn explained that current cars show an almost dramatic loss of aerodynamic support when chasing another car but that the new generation of car that is now being developed will try to solve this problem:
"We already see a huge difference," he said. "With the current cars, when in pursuit, 50 percent is lost in performance. The car we are developing now, loses 10% of performance. It's a big improvement over the current reality."
Nikolas Tombazis, head of the FIA single-seater, estimates a less dramatic current loss (about minus 33% performance) on the cars that are now on track but argues that the solution should not be to remove the aerodynamic support of the car in the future. This would be too simplistic a solution that would go against the philosophy of F1, which despite everything, should always have the fastest cars in the world:
"What we need is that aerodynamic support is delivered in a way that cars can compete with each other. Overtaking can be used as a measure of success, but in fact hard-fought racing and the ability of cars to race one after another or side-to-side and attack is what everyone wants [even if it does not result in overtakin.
