Duel of giants-KTM 790 vs YAMAHA TÉNÉRÉ
This is undoubtedly the most awaited duel of the year in which the two brands, KTM and Yamaha compete with two new models, a new segment created by them. Both ride parallel twin-cylinder engines and share the same concept of adventurous motorcycle with great offroad fitness, a clear alternative to the heavy MaxiTrail and the more extreme vocals for pure and hard enduro, allowing a superior level of comfort and autonomy that allows them to travel long distances .
After an enormous expectation created both by Yamaha and KTM, both models are finally there and we all look forward to the possibility of comparing them on the ground because on paper their main characteristics are already known.
The KTM 790 Adventure R version, the most offroad version (there is another non-R version), is a motorcycle with advanced technology, which builds the engine of the Duke 790, a motor that is a reference in terms of performance and that will certainly be adapted for off-road use. With 85 hp is obviously the most powerful compared to the Ténéré engine, the same that we also know of other models of the brand, the MT-07 or Tracer 700, and which in the case of Ténéré 72.4 hp.It would be interesting to also compare the weights of both but Yamaha does not provide this information while the KTM declares a weight of 189 Kg (Out of curiosity and comparatively, the KTM 1090 Adventure R weighs 207 kg and has 125 hp). Both have arguments in their favor and certainly the final price, which at the moment is not fixed by the brands in any of the models, may also be a decisive element in the choice of one or the other.
His style is clearly that of a Rally bike, with a front that leaves no doubt in this respect and which integrates 4 LED lights and a screen high enough to protect the information panel and all the equipment that one decides to mount for navigation and guidance.
Braking is ensured by double 282mm disc in the front and a single 245mm disc in the rear, both assisted by ABS that is detachable. The rims are spokes 21 "ahead and 18" behind and mount Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR mixed floor tires. The Ténéré 700 is available in 3 colors: Ceramic Ice (blue), Competition White (white) and Power Black (black).
The fuel tank has a capacity of 16 liters which gives a range of about 350 Kms to the Ténéré 700. The PVP is for now unknown but will be announced soon.
The KTM 790 Adventure R is also a lightweight and compact bike, a perfect symbiosis between a KTM 450 Rally and a Maxi Trail 1090, certainly more powerful and sophisticated from the electronic point of view than the Ténéré because it has a Ride by Wire accelerator and four series driving modes that are Street, OffRoad, Rain and Rally. Also standard comes with MTC traction control and ABS in curve, OffRoad mode and OffRoad ABS.
The KTM 790's twin-cylinder engine is very compact and designed to be a structuring element of the bike keeping the center of gravity down. The fuel tank has a capacity of 20 liters which gives an autonomy of about 450Kms (100 more than in Ténéré). The clutch is of the sliding type and assembles 6-speed gearbox (with optional quick shift). The suspensions of the 790 Adventure R are WP 48mm in the front with a stroke of 240mm (200mm in the normal Adventure version) and rear mounted mono damper WP with PDS and a stroke of 240mm.
The KTM 790 Adventure mounts a TFT color information panel and a front with the typical KTM Adventure LED technology headlamp. Unlike the normal version the Adventure fits high wing and the wheels are, in both versions, of 21 "at the front and 18" behind and it assembles Metzeler Karoo mixed tires.
Interestingly both the Yamaha Ténéré 700 and the KTM 790 Adventure R have the same seat height as they are 880mm, which gives it a greater suitability for the off-road.
