MK3 Golf, the first to officially come to Brazil
In 1990, the then President Fernando Collor reopened the importation of automobiles in Brazil. In addition to the arrival of new brands to the country, those already installed took advantage of the wave to complement their product line without the need to design or produce them here. In 1995, Volkswagen introduced Golf to the Brazilian market as a successor to Pointer, which still originated from Autolatina (joint venture between VW and Ford Brazilians).Golf was born in Europe in 1974.
Here we officially know the hatch from its third generation (MK3), which was shown in Europe in the middle of 1991 and arrived in Brazil in 1995. From Germany, it was brought in the GL version, with 4 doors and 1.8 engine with electronic injection monoponto and 90 hp. From Mexico, the GLX arrived, with a more refined finish and optional sunroof, besides the sporty GTI, with bodywork two doors. GLX and GTI used a 2.0-liter engine with a cross-flow head, multipoint injection and 116 hp. There are some GTI units with VR6 engine, a 6-cylinder 2.8-liter with 174 hp, but very rare around here.
In 1996, GL 1.8 also came from Mexico and gained multipoint injection. Called GL MI, it reached 96 horsepower. In 1997, the GLX received the automatic 4-speed gearbox as an option and the GTI was no longer imported. The following year, the revolutionary MK4 Golf was launched, first imported and then produced in Brazil, in the São José dos Pinhais (PR) factory along with the Audi A3, with whom it divided the platform and several components.
