MORE DETAILS OF THE NEW ELECTRIC MOTOR eDRIVE
Up to eleven electric models and eight hybrid plug-in. This is the number of vehicles BMW plans to launch by 2025 equipped with the fifth generation of its eDrive electric propulsion system, an offensive that will begin in 2019.The first two models to come will be the MINI and iX3, the 100% electric version of the new BMW X3, and the two will feature a completely new, much more sophisticated electric powertrain, which in a more compact form integrates the electric motor, transmission and power electronics. The German manufacturer has designed this suite to be completely scalable - can be mounted on different types of models and segments - in a new strategy that revolves around the HPLC architecture that remains, but the front-wheel drive UKL receives a larger change to denominate FAAR, offering three forms of propulsion: combustion engines, plug-in hybrids and electric propulsion.
BMW, which already announced that it will manufacture its own batteries, designed them in a modular way - larger in size for X models and smaller in passenger cars - offering three power levels, with 60 kWh, 90 kWh and 120 kWh, which is translated into three levels of autonomy, with 450, 550 and 700 kilometers.Bringing these power levels to the current BMW model line assumes that the most basic level of 60 kWh will equip the compact and the 30e version of the new 3 Series, while the second level of 90 kW and 550 km will be offered in the 5 Series and Series 7, leaving the most powerful version for the most exclusive models of the line in versions 50e.
In the same way, the strategy presents four power levels for electric motors divided into two categories, one basic and the other more performance focused, so that in the first category of 'BEV Entry' we will have powers of 100 kW and 190 kW (equivalent at 134 and 255 hp) and at the upper level 'BEV Performance', of 250 kW and more than 300 kW, which in a combustion engine are equivalent to 335 and 402 hp respectively. The combination of these motors with different powers depends on the type of model and its configuration. BMW engineers have adapted the power train to be mounted directly on the front or rear axle depending on whether it is a MINI model or the BMW 1 Series and 2 Series.
