LAMBORGHINI
THE FIRST ALL-TERRACE OF LUXURY OF THE ITALIAN BRAND
Lamborghini Urus, the first Italian SUV, Lamborghini's Polo Storico department, the new division in charge of preserving the classic models of the brand and its historical legacy, presents images of a copy of the LM002, which after a few months. being restored, is exhibited in the museum of the brand in Sant'Agata Bolognese.
The Lamborghini LM002 is certainly the most peculiar model of the heady history of the company founded by Ferruccio Lamborghini. At a time when the Italian brand had the best-selling Countach model, the LM002 was in production from 1986 to 1993, although the model actually came into being in the late 1970s, since the brand's intention was not to manufacture an all- civil, but military terrain, hence the wild configuration of the LM002, which by size and position never had a single rival in the Market.
In the 1970s, Lamborghini was hired by Mobility Technology International (MTI), which in turn was hired to develop a new all-terrain vehicle for the various divisions of the US Army. At the same time as the HMMWV, or Humvee, was developed, the project presented by AM General. The resulting vehicle was named Cheetah and featured a Chrysler V8 engine mounted behind the passenger compartment and was largely developed by MTI but soon shipped to Sant'Agata Bolognese for final adjustments and finishes. Presented in 1977, the Cheetah had few opportunities in the competition that would later be overcome by Humvee, as the army did not have the opportunity to test the only model made of the model, as both Lamborghini and MTI were immediately driven by a company called FMC Corporation, since the design of the Cheetah was based on that of the XR311, a military vehicle manufactured in the 1970s by the FMC.
After the competition fiasco, the Lamborghini staff decided to develop an evolution of the original Cheetah, but now as a civilian vehicle. This replaced the Chrysler-origin V8 with a 5.9 liter V8 from the AMC, also mounted on the rear. Its development was suspended by several problems and the definitive model of production received notable modifications, as the change of the location of the motor to the front. This was the true germ of the definitive production model and was named LM001.Revealed in its definitive format several years after the introduction of the LM001, the new LM002 featured the same 5.2-liter V12 engine that could be found on the Countach, with a maximum power around 450 hp. But for those who wanted more power, there was a 7.2-liter V12 option that Lamborghini had developed for boats. This, together with its high weight and great height, made it a real gas-consuming eater (there was no diesel option), so it had a 290-liter tank.
